Historic Ramsgate, Mapped

1822

Town & Royal Harbour of Ramsgate (Surveyed 1822)

This meticulously engraved map by R. Collard and G. Hurst presents Ramsgate in its early 19th-century form. It vividly portrays the harbour, windmills, orchards and the obelisk erected to commemorate King George IV’s embarkation and return in 1821.

1849

Ramsgate in 1849 still reads like a garden town- orchards, open fields, and gardened plots dominate its landscape. The South Eastern Railway had just arrived (Ramsgate Town opened in April 1846), setting the stage for the town's rapid reshape as a Victorian resort.

1872

Ordnance Survey (1872)

By 1872, Ramsgate had transformed into a densely built Victorian town- streets now bustle, dense with buildings and infrastructure, as frequent visitors and rail travellers reshape the former fishing hamlet into a stylish seaside destination.
